Update on City Hall Flood

 Majority of Services Operating as Normal

The majority of City services continue to run normally following a burst of a 6 inch water line leading into the main mechanical room at City Hall on Saturday night. Excavation work outside City Hall is currently underway to find the main cause.

Programs and services including public works, garbage collection and recreation programs are running normally, with the exception of the Puddle Jumpers Preschool program located at the Civic Centre. “Unfortunately, water entered the Civic Centre in the area where the preschool program is run,” says Dillon Shewchuk, Community and Economic Development Manager. “After initial clean-up it was deemed that programming at the preschool could continue, but the disaster management firm we are working with requested to do an additional check of the area to ensure it is safe. We understand this is inconvenient and frustrating for parents whose children attend the preschool, however our number one priority is to ensure the safety of our residents. We are working closely with the preschool to expedite their reopening.

City staff and the disaster management company have moved the vast majority of files and documents into the former Shop Easy grocery, the City’s new place of operation until City Hall is properly restored. Set up of networks and communication systems is also continuing, as is sourcing of temporary furnishings. 

“Our short-term goal right now is to be able to restore temporary power to City Hall so that we can complete the clean-up and remediation of the building,” says Shewchuk. “We can’t say when we expect to re-open City Hall, but we will be working hard in the meantime to complete set up and get running at our temporary location.”

As the City’s phone system is still not fully functional, residents are reminded to call the Martensville Athletic Pavilion (MAP) if they have any questions about any civic program or service. 

The City wishes to thank residents for their patience as they work to ensure civic programs and services remain intact, Saskatoon Co-op has helped transition to the temporary space, and to Lydale Construction for the excellent work they are doing.

The City will continue to post information as it is available on their website at Martensville.ca and on the City’s social media pages (Facebook and Twitter) where regular updates will be posted. Media advisories will be issued as required.
