Drainage & Elevations

Drainage & Elevations

The City of Martensville manages stormwater using a combination of surface drainage and storm sewer systems. Water is directed into stormwater retention ponds before exiting the city via the Opimihaw Creek.

On this Page:
Drainage
  • Homeowners are responsible for:
    • Ensuring water does not run onto adjacent properties
    • Making sure that fences constructed at the rear of the property do not obstruct the natural flow of water.
Swales
  • Swales are shallow channels used to direct stormwater:
    • Swales can be placed along the rear of properties that do not have rear lanes, or along the side yards between properties to help direct water flow to streets or the rear of the property.
    • Swales must remain in place.
    • Swales must be integrated into property landscaping.
Sump Pumps

Proper sump pump use is essential for preventing basement flooding and protecting your home’s foundation. Click here for information on The City of Martensville's Sump Pump Bylaw.

Please follow these best practices:

  • Do:
    • Maintain your approved lot grade plan
    • Ensure sump pump pipes discharge water at least two meters from the back foundation wall onto your backyard.
    • Use a splash pad under the sump pump outlet if water is discharged onto the ground.
    • Use long pipes to drain away sump pump discharge.  A flexible hose with holes works well to distribute the water to your backyard.
    • Slope the ground below the discharge pipe down and away from the foundation wall.
    • Check your sump pump regularly to ensure that it’s functioning properly. Consider a backup battery system for your sump pump in case of power outages.
  • Do Not:
    • Alter your lot grade plan when landscaping your property
    • Discharge sump water onto sidewalks. this can freeze and create dangerous ice buildup.
    • Hook up your sump drainage to the sanitary sewer system.  The sanitary sewer system is designed to manage normal flows of sewage, not rainwater or water from sump pumps.
    • Turn off your sump pump.
Grade Elevations

Proper final grading is essential to ensure water is directed safely away from your home. The best methods for managing water runoff depend on your lot’s setting and contour of the land.

  • Land developers must establish suitable lot grades for every lot sold in Martensville based on a design established by the City engineer.
  • An elevation plan will be provided with your Development Permit.
  • When your basement is staked out, the land surveyor sets the approved grade on-site for the concrete contractor to follow. Building your home at the proper elevation is crucial:
    • ✔ Maintains curb appeal
    • ✔ Ensures proper drainage
    • ✔ Protects your property
    • ✔ Helps preserve the resale value of your home
