Keeping in Touch with Residents- Message from the Mayor

I hope everyone has been enjoying the first few days of summer! We were happy to report this week that the Aquatic Centre will be opening in early July and swimming lessons will be offered. I know my family is happy about this! Staff at the City and the Aquatic Centre are working hard to ensure the appropriate safety measures are in place before opening. Please watch our social media pages for more information.

A big congratulations to the Martensville graduating class of 2020! I hope you had a chance to see the fireworks and that you will take part in the procession to show your support for these young adults at this important milestone in their lives.

On June 29th more of Phase 4 locations will be allowed to open – this includes indoor pools, indoor rinks, libraries, museums, galleries, movie theatres. For more details the Re-Open Saskatchewan plan can be found online at www.saskatchewan.ca/re-open

As of yesterday, there are 98 active cases of COVID-19 in Saskatchewan. To date, we have had 759 cases, 648 people have recovered. There have been 13 deaths. Even as more locations are opening up, please remember we were able to get to the point we are at today by following the safe distancing guidelines being provided to us by our public health authorities. This must continue in order to keep the cases at a number that can be managed by our health care system.

Remember, if you are now working outside the home you may want to consider being tested for COVID-19. And of course, if you have symptoms, please stay home and call the HealthLine at 811, call your family physician, or take the online self-assessment at www.saskatchewan.ca/COVID19.

Our City and Emergency Services continue to work with other municipalities and to share information from the Province to ensure the safety of our residents and staff.

A reminder on City programs and services:

    • All priority programs and services continue to be provided.
    • The water meter read/estimate schedule is being extended into the summer months because of pandemic.  With water usage typically higher in warmer months we encourage residents to keep accounts accurate and current by submitting during your ‘estimate’ month.
    • Sports fields remain closed however we hope to have an update on this soon.
    • Garage sales are not permitted as per the Re-Open Saskatchewan plan.
    • Registration for swimming lessons is now open with the first sets of lessons starting July 6th.   Visit our online Program Registration on our website or contact the MAP for information or to register.
    • There is still time to get in on our Organics Program which will run until October. To sign up for this subscription program contact City Hall.

The City is helping to support businesses and residents in the short-term through the following:

    • Interest charges on utility bills is suspended until November 1, 2020.
    • Water service will not be discontinued due to non-payment or overdue account status.
    • The deadline for property tax payments is extended from July 31 to October 30, 2020.
    • All interest charges on property tax owing are suspended until November 1, 2020.

In closing, I hope you had a chance to check out the City’s newest video launched this week. The video features the Martensville Community Recreation Project and their work in raising funds for a new Multi-Purpose Sports Facility.

With Canada Day next week, please watch our social media pages for events and activities for Canada Day.   Expect a mix of virtual and live events including a ‘drive-in’ style cinema and fireworks.

Have a safe and happy Canada Day!

    Sincerely,

    Mayor Kent Muench
