Keeping in Touch with Residents- Message from the Mayor

A lot has changed since our last update, and for the most part, it’s good news. Vaccines are working, this is evident as our case numbers continue to drop. As of yesterday, there are 902 active cases of COVID-19 in Saskatchewan. There have been 47,668 cases to date, and 46,213 of those have recovered. However, 553 people have now died from the virus. I’d like to start today’s message by offering my condolences to the families of those who have lost a loved one recently. Please continue to follow the public health guidelines that are currently in place - wear your mask in all public places, follow the safe distance guidelines, stay home if you are feeling ill, and wash your hands often. Up to 10 people can gather indoors, but it should be the same 10 people.

To date, more than 845,439 vaccines had been administered in Saskatchewan, and Step 2 of the Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan is on schedule to take effect June 20th. In this step, 15 people are allowed at private indoor gatherings, and 150 people can gather publicly indoors, outdoors and at private outdoor events. Please see www.Saskatchewan.ca/COVID19 for more on restrictions being lifted. We remain on track for all public health restrictions to be lifted by July 11th.

We are seeing some vaccine hesitancy in our province. We can all help combat this by sharing the positive benefits of being vaccinated so that people feel as comfortable as possible. The more people that are vaccinated, the better off we will all be.

The age eligibility for second doses of the vaccine is decreasing. As of now, anyone over 55 can get their second dose. When it’s your turn for a vaccine, appointments can be booked online at www.Saskatchewan.ca/COVID19  24 hours a day, or you can call 1-833-SASKVAX (833-727-5829) from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., 7 days a week. Numerous pharmacies are also administering the vaccines, and there are some community clinics now operating.

Here in Martensville, the Clinic at the North Ridge Centre has offered both walk-in vaccinations and appointment-only clinics. Watch for updates on the next clinic dates and types. The phone number to schedule an appointment is 1-833-727-5829.

It’s still important to get tested if you feel any symptoms of COVID. Phone the Healthline at 811 or your family physician, or visit the Drive-Thru testing site in Saskatoon, located at 3630 Thatcher Avenue. It is open weekdays from 12:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. and weekends from 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Please visit www.saskatchewan.ca/COVID19 for more information on testing or to take the online self-assessment.

Our City and Emergency Services continue to work with other municipalities and to share information from the Province to ensure the safety of our residents and staff.

A re-cap on City programs and services:

    • All priority programs and services continue to be provided.

    • Meter reading by City crews have resumed but residents can continue to submit their own water meter reading. With water usage typically higher in warmer months this will keep accounts accurate and current.

    • City Hall, Wheatland Regional Library, the MAP, the Sports Centre, Northridge Centre and Heritage Centre are all open with occupancy limits in place and safety guidelines being followed. The MAP is open but all drop-in programs and pick up games are cancelled.

    • Water service will not be discontinued due to non-payment or overdue account status.

    • The Aquatic Centre is now open and is offering swimming lessons as well as Public Swim times.  There is a strict capacity of 100 people in the pool area so you are encouraged to book ahead.  Walk up spots are available but will be in high demand.

A reminder on support for businesses:

    • Interest on property taxes and utilities for commercial or industrial properties retroactive from November 2020 is suspended until July 31st, 2021.

In closing, have you heard about our Family Outdoor Park? Every Wednesday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. you and your family can come out and try a new activity each week! Find out more on our Facebook page. The Spray Pool is also open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 pm. Finally, remember to visit the Farmer’s Market, located at the Corner of Centennial and 3rd Street North. Check out Facebook for dates and times. Finally, a special thank you to all those that organized, supported and attended Buster Days this year. It had to be different than in the past but we look forward to when we can freely celebrate together again.

Have a great weekend everyone and stay safe!

    Sincerely,

    Mayor Kent Muench
