Recycling Disposal
Below is a list of ways to eliminate / recycle your garbage without overburdening the landfill:
  • Appliances - Appliances in working order and newer than 15 years can be donated to Village Green Furniture and Appliances. Other charities may take the appliances but you would need to call ahead to confirm this. Non-working appliances can be taken to BN Steels & Metals (2002) Inc.
  • Beverage Containers - Refunds are available for beverage containers such as pop bottles at SARCAN Recyling Depot at 621 9th Street North, Martensville, please call for hours 242-4759.
  • CFL Light Bulbs - CFL light bulbs can be dropped off at RONA or Home Depot.
  • Clothing and Household Items - Clothing and household items can be donated to charity-based organizations such as those listed under furniture. Another option is joining a freecycle network, www.freecycle.org is an email network devoted to connecting people with items that are no longer needed with people who could use those items. There are only three simple rules: Everything must be free, legal and appropriate for all ages. Residents of Martensville log onto the Saskatoon Freecycle Network. A third option is to participate in the Martensville Annual Garage Sale, which takes place on the last weekend of May by hosting your own garage sale.
  • Composting -Composting is a great way to reduce your garbage each week and beautify your yard. There are great web sites and books with directions for creating your own heap. Just remember not to add anything such as meat scraps that will cause a smell or attract rodents.
  • Electronics - Drop off your old electronics without charge to any SARCAN Recycling Depot or call (888) 350-6555.
  • Furniture - Furniture can be donated to worthwhile charities. Canadian Diabetes Association, Community Living, CWL Clothing, Salvation Army, and Village Green Furniture and Appliances, to name a few, accept clean reusable furniture. Call ahead a some of these associations may offer free pick up.
  • Outdated Prescriptions - Old prescriptions should be returned to your pharmacy rather than dumping them down the drain or into the garbage. Returning any unused medications ensures that drugs such as antibiotics do not leach into our groundwater and rivers.
  • Printer Cartridges - Canadian Diabetes Association accepts used inkjet and laser cartridges. Call 1-800-226-8464 ext 7212 for drop off locations. Several businesses also recycle used printer cartridges. Check the phone book for listings.
  • Rechargeable Ni-Cd Batteries - The Call2Recycle website can help you recycle your portable rechargeable batteries including Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metals Hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium Ion (Li-ion) and Small Sealed Lead (Pb) batteries weighing less than 2 lbs./1 kg. These batteries are commonly found in cordless power tools, cellular and cordless phones, laptop computers, camcorders, digital cameras, and remote control toys.
  • Used Car Oil - Visit the Used Oil Management Association website or call 1-877-645-7275 to find a list of businesses that accept used oil.
  • Used Eye Glasses - The Lion's Club collects used eyeglasses. There is a drop off box at City Hall.
  • Used Lumber and Building Supplies - Habitat for Humanity's Habitat Restore is located at 122 Avenue D South, Saskatoon. They accept (but not limited to) doors, windows, all types of lumber, plumbing fixtures and accessories, electrical fixtures and accessories, cabinets, hardware, and some tools. (No appliances accepted).
  • Used Metal and Vehicle Batteries - Metal products such as aluminum, copper, converters, radiators and steel can be taken to businesses such as Hub City Metals for recycling. Companies such as this may pay for your metals and vehicular batteries.
  • Vehicles -The Kidney Car Program offer tax receipts for working and non-working vehicles (cars, motorcycles, boats, campers, snowmobiles, etc.). Proceeds benefit The Kidney Foundation of Canada's programs and services.
